Lost my degree wheel somewhere, so I had to do this, thought I'd write it up since most people don't know you can do this. Also these instructions are good for setting lifter lash, but I'll edit them later for that.
I assume you have already checked for PTV before doing this. Kind of a good idea before you go twirling the motor around.
.Install the camshaft. Regular dot to to
.Install timing chain
.Install timing cover
.Install balancer
.Install timing pointer.
.Using a piston stop, bring the engine to TDC on Number 1
.Not the location of the balancer marks and your pointer (they may not match...)
.Adjust the pointer If needed.
.Remove the piston stop at this time.
.Install 1 intake lifter and 1 exhaust lifter.
.Get the dial indicator out and set it up on the intake lifter.
.Turn the engine over in direction of rotation.
.Remember, IO/EC... Intake opening, exhaust closing. When the exhaust lifter just starts to come up, stop.
.Zero the dial indicator out at this time. The intake lifter is on the basecirle of the cam now, or at it's lowest point.. (this would be the appropriate time to set the lash on that lifter if we were doing that right now)
.Turn the engine in direction of rotation.
.When you get to TDC as marked by the pointer, stop again. 17.Record the lift that is on the dial indicator.
.Your cam card should have a reading for lift at TDC, compare the two numbers.
.If you came up short, i.e. not enough lift, advance the cam (because it's not all the way there yet). If you have too much, retard the cam.
For every 1* at TDC you are off, that is .0075” (+/-), so make the appropriate adjustments using your offset crank key's, cam key's, or timing chains.
